COOLZEY TOUR WITH SADAT X 8/22-9/3
NEW EP SOIXANTE-NEUF OUT NOW
Publicity contact: Jerry Graham at Warm Fuzzy
Des Moines, IA’s renowned beatsmith Coolzey has announced a string of dates with Sadat X (Brand Nubian, Beat Kids) and Cold Heat (Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker). This tour comes hot on the heels of a successful US run with Radix, upon which Coolzey muses “This was my first punk-rock style DIY tour, and my first real attempt at doing an all hip hop bill. It went really well, was fun and eye opening at the same time. The tour was completely about exploring, going places we had never been before, and made me want to work extra hard to push the envelope in the future.” This future looks bright, and Coolzey is excited to hit the road with one of his heroes, Sadat X. “I grew up listening to him so much, and I know every song on the second Brand Nubian album by heart. It’s really an honor to be on tour with him because he’s somebody whose lyrics got into my head and stayed there. The whole tour should be amazing.” The recent tours are in support of his newest EP Soixante-Neuf, the second in a series of three that will be recorded in a different part of the country, and represent a different time period and state of mind for him. “I realized that these three EP’s are sort of a trilogy of the three stages of life: youth, middle age, and death. Soixante Neuf is the darkest because in my mind, middle age is the darkest part of one’s life. Each EP is more of the whole recording experience, with everyone who was there and involved as a part of it.” The EP caught the attention of many, and hip NYC music mag Impose called the album “true old-skool hip hop filled with cool beats and poetic raps.”
Soixante-Neuf is the follow up to last year’s He Did, which Coolzey sees as representing the youth part of the trilogy, and had a unique guest appearance from famous bluegrass muscian William Elliott Whitmore who added vocals and Banjo. He Did had much media success, with popular hip hop magazine Hip Hop Connection praised him for his originality, saying “Though aligned with a clutch of backpack rappers and indie rockers, Des Moines farm kid Coolzey grabs the scratches/intelligent sideward lyricism steez by the lapels with a little more straightforwardness. Crucially, he tolerates nothing below massively fun production.” Popular hip hop tastemaker Okay Player.com said of Coolzey “if you take quality hip-hop seriously, you'll want to take time to hear [Coolzey] out… He Did is a 6 song EP that shows he loves to write, and does not mind showing a sense of humor.”
In support of He Did Coolzey went out on tour with various friends and fellow hip hoppers through the Midwest and East Coast in December 2006. He has done four U.S. tours in the last two years, and has performed with such heavyweights as Brother Ali, Cannibal Ox and Mr. Lif. In addition to his solo work, Coolzey has also appeared on record as part of The Sucka MC’s a loose collective of artists that hit their peak during the period between 1997 and 2004. Coolzey is currently finishing up the third of the three EPs, Coolzey vs. Przm, recorded in CA, which is some of the last work by the recently deceased DJ Przm (Spitball, Copywrite, Illogic). The EP is set to be released in the Fall, and he plans to go on tour with Count Bass D in September/October, so check www.myspace.com/coolzey for updates. Tour dates below:
